Post natal depression

Post natal depression is a very specific type of depression which occurs after having a baby. It affects 1 in 10 women and it is important to seek help as soon as possible. The difficulty is how do you know if you are suffering from it. Most women have the baby blues after having a baby which is the result of more volatile hormones in your body than usual.
The baby blues usually don’t last for more than a couple of weeks so if your symptoms last longer then you could have post natal depression.

Some of the signs that show you may be suffering from this are – a persistent feeling of sadness and low mood – lack of enjoyment in anything – lack of energy – trouble sleeping at night- struggling to bond with your baby.

If you recognise these symptoms contact your health visitor or GP as soon as possible. They may refer you for counselling or therapy.
