For someone who has been active and fully participating in life to suddenly be feeling unable to do what they normally would do is traumatic and distressing. It is also frustrating and stressful. Equally there are many people who persevere with a long term illness. This may differ in severity but in almost all cases there is a mental health impact.
More than 15 million people in the UK live with a long term physical illness and evidence shows that they are 2 or 3 times more likely to develop mental ill health. This may be anxiety, depression, suicidal thoughts due to loneliness and isolation.
